Three-dimensional light manipulation by gold nanobumps

Gold nanobumps on the surface of a gold thin film would scatter surface plasmon wave to forward and backward scattering light. Both dot array and chains of gold nanobumps are built to demonstrate the light-manipulating properties. While fan-shaped forward scattering light from individual nanobump is observed, three-dimensional (3-D) light focusing and diverging properties is found from quarter circle structure composed of nanobumps. Nanobumps with their heights of 16nm can deflect the surface plasmon waves to produce 3-D focusing at 3.6 micron above the surface of gold film. Experiment results clearly demonstrate that 3-D forward and backward focusing from gold nanobumps are with different amplitudes and directions of the vertical propagation vectors.
