摘要

This chapter introduces the role of the Interdisciplinary Executive Scientist (IES). These professionals combine translational science skills and boundary spanning expertise with both research and administrative/managerial tasks to drive integration and success within interdisciplinary science teams. The role shares many similarities with the roles of Integration and Implementation Science (I2S) specialist defined elsewhere (Bammer, Disciplining interdisciplinarity: integration and implementation sciences for researching complex real-world problems, 2012) and Research Development Professional (RDP) discussed in Chap. 28 but is distinct in ways that warrant separate consideration of requisite skills, organizational support needs, training, and metrics of success. This chapter provides the context for defining the IES role and discusses, in particular, the epistemic, managerial, and emotional/interpersonal functions involved in the work.
