The effect of hydrofluoric acid with alkaline peroxide pretreatment for glucose and xylose recovery from rice husk

Rice husks can be utilized as a feedstock for ethanol production, but optimal pretreatment is required to make the cellulose more amenable to the action of hydrolytic enzymes. In this study, the effect of hydrofluoric acid (HF) with alkaline peroxide pretreatment for glucose and xylose recovery from rice husks was investigated. The combined use of HF and alkaline peroxide promoted the delignification process and increased sugar conversion during subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. The pretreatment of rice husks with combined HF/alkaline peroxide showed better efficiency than that with only alkaline peroxide. In these pretreatment processes, no furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural were detected.
