摘要

Tackification is a widely used method in making `net-shape fiber preform' in Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). A commercial tackifier (PT 500 from 3M) was studied, and it was found that tackifier concentration, tackifier powder size, and the application conditions all play important roles in governing the moldability of tackified fiber preforms. The tackified graphite fiber preforms were used in a high temperature Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process - SCRIMP to fabricate aerospace-grade composites. The experimental results show that high fiber content (>60% by volume) composites can be manufactured by this low cost method with the help of tackification. The void content and the mechanical properties of parts molded by SCRIMP and RTM are compared.
