摘要

This chapter explores the shipping business strategies of the Taiwanese maritime industry. It reviews the strategies adopted in container shipping. The chapter focuses on the concept of strategic planning and strategic groups. It also reviews the literature on service capability and the strategies of liner shipping companies. The chapter presents the shipping business strategies for major Taiwanese liner shipping companies. Globalization has led to a strong growth in the world economy and seaborne trade. Maritime transport services include tramp and liner shipping. Liner shipping is unique in that it operates on the same routes, at the same prices, and with a regularly scheduled service between a well-known set of ports. The term “strategy” was first coined from the Greek word strategos, meaning the art of the general, indicating its military origins. A corporate strategy helps to identify business segments to pursue and improve as well as defining operational tactics based on the mission and goals of the organization.
