Heat Transfer Studies on Epoxy Based Sandwich Structural Composites for Wind Blade

摘要

High performance lightweight wind blades are made using a sandwich structure with a foam core sandwiched between skin shells made of fiber reinforced polymeric composites. The temperature profile of the reaction process is a crucial issue for the foam core stability and durability. Expanded polystyrene (XPS) foam cores were molded using the Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process (SCRIMP) at different cure temperatures. The XPS foam survived at 60 °C while it deformed at 75 °C. In order to predict the temperature profile, a simplified model was developed and solved using FLUENT. Experimental results show that the simple model can be used to explain some aspect of the cure but needs to be improved to give a closer prediction of the temperature filed.
