abstract = "Energy efficiency is a critical issue in wireless and mobile communications. Because high-speed packet data services such as multimedia and streaming video services would be the focus of 3G (third generation) wireless systems, the battery life of a mobile station is expected to decrease dramatically comparing to 2G systems. It therefore is an imperative subject in 3G systems to utilize energy efficiently. This paper quantifies the energy consumption and the reconnection latency due to power saving mechanisms in cdma2000 networks, with a focus on cdma2000 1X EV-DV. Streaming service and web browsing, the two major high speed packet data services in cdma2000 1X EVDV, have been studied in relevant to energy efficiency. Through extensive simulation, values for parameters related to power saving techniques are suggested under various traffic models and user behaviors.",
