Crash surrogate measures for mixed traffic flow

摘要

Due to the high mobility and convenience, scooters are popular in some developing cities especially in Asia. However, motorcycles have major safety concerns since the vehicle does not provide any protection to riders during a crash. Using crash surrogates on safety analysis is emerging in the past decade, but previous studies focused on safety studies of automobiles. This study is to investigate for an appropriate crash surrogate measure for mixed traffic flow with scooters in urban arterials. The widely used time-based surrogate, time-to-collision (TTC), is considered. Using a vehicle trajectory dataset collected in Taipei, Taiwan, the results show that the potential crashes identified with TTC are reasonable and a good representation of the observations.
