Most of the traditional ghost cancellation schemes use the adaptive signal processing technique. Therefore, it is necessary to interleave training sequences in the TV signal. Although this method can yield good results, it complicates the TV transmission system. As the transmission signal in HDTV is digital, many digital processing techniques can be applied. In this paper, we propose the use of a blind equalizer in an HDTV system for ghost cancellation. The biggest advantage of using this scheme is that the equalizer can be self-convergent without training sequences. This simplifies the HDTV transmission system. The basic algorithm of a blind equalizer is similar to that of an adaptive signal processor. The simple structure of the algorithm makes hardware implementation possible. We also suggest employing a self-orthogonizing scheme that can improve the convergent rate of the blind equalizer. Simulations show that our approach is feasible, and that the improvement of the convergent rate is significant.
