Emission intensities from the CO2 bands at 667, 2349 and 3700 cm-1 are monitored simultaneously behind shock waves over temperatures of 900 to 2300°K. It is confirmed that the former emission intensity changes approximately exponentially but the latter two have induction periods behind shock waves. Rates and mechanisms of energy transfer in CO2 are discussed by comparing the experimental data with numerical calculations of the relaxation equations.
