Abstract

With the rapid increase in the complexity of chips and the popularity of portable devices, the performance demand is not any more the only important constraint in the embedded system. Instead, the energy consumption has become the one of main criteria. Energy consumption at I/O interface is a significant part of overall system due to the high capacitance of bus transition. In this paper, we propose an encoding scheme which reconstructs these interlaced sets of address streams with variable strides. Given the current address, only the reference to the active stream that hit the current address is needed to be sent. To exploit the locality and dynamically adjust the stride of active address stream, we partially compare the previous reference to the address stream with the current reference. Experiments with several MediaBench benchmarks shows an average 60% reduction in switching activity.
