The implementation of signing e-documents by using the Wireless Identity Module of cellular phones

Abstract

Traditionally, documents were recorded on paper and manually signed by related personnel to identify responsibility. However, with the evolution of communication technology, there are now several different ways for people to make contact or communicate with others. Based on our observations, it is convenient if the document could be transferred via network and e-signed with the proper tools. This circumstance still needs people to be in front of the desktop, and thus hinders mobility. To follow the trend towards mobility, this study proposes a way to handle e-documents with cellular phones. To ensure safety and non-repudiation, the embedded Wireless Identity Module (WIM) inside the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card is used to authenticate and sign e-documents. Based on the characteristics of the SIM card and WIM module, this proposed system provides a secure process for e-signature and reduces the possibility of dispute. As can be imagined, this idea not only can provide convenience and security for mobile businessmen, but also can stimulate the development of mobile commerce.
