Abstract
The surface-enhanced Raman spectra (SERS) of dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, epinine isoproterenol 3-meth-oxytyramine, and catechol In pH 7.2 buffers on a silver electrode are reported. Catechol and the catecholamines are shown to be coordinated to silver through both oxygens. The methoxylated derivative Is a monodentate complex. Intensities maximize near -0.9 V vs saturated calomel electrode. The strongest bands in the spectra are phenolic carbon-ox-ygen stretches and the V19bmodes around 1270 and 1480 cm-1 respectively. Ascorbate, acetylcholine, glutathione, L-Dopa, and the catecholamine acetic acid metabolites are SERS-inactive under the measurement conditions. Dopamine detection limit for the vieb band is 3 X 10-7M with a 10-s measurement time.
