Abstract

In the last few years, a significant challenge has been to realize the growth of silicene on solid substrates. Silicene can be synthesized by the deposition of Si atoms on Ag(111); this substrate is the most surveyed in the literature both theoretically and experimentally. In this chapter we focus on the geometric and electronic structures of silicene grown on Ag(111), from the sub-monolayer regime to the formation of multilayers, with the focus being on the 4 × 4 and 4/√3 p × 4/√3 p superstructures. Several puzzles that we have solved are discussed, as well as ones that are yet to be solved.
