Abstract

The objectives of this study were to technically testing the feasibility of combining the RFID and PDA technologies in nursing care and to develop a support system for the nursing shift for demonstration, which featured with ”Positive Patient Identification, PPI” and ”Point-of-Care, POC” for patient's safety and security. The management of cases with clinical pathway for the laparocholecystectomy patients was used to design the system.
The COMPAQ's iPAQ 3650 Pocket PC and the Microsoft eMbedded Visual Basic were used to design the PDA subsystem. The OMRON's V720S CF R/W reader and Philips's 128 Bytes I-CODE II passive tags were used for the RFID readers and tags separately. The Visual Basic 6.0 was used to code the desktop subsystem. The Davis' Technology Acceptance Model was used to examine the perceived ease of use and usefulness of system for 10 nurse subjects from the General Surgery In-patient Ward of a teaching medical center in Taipei.
The system consists of 4 functions: Patient Identification, Shift Support, Patient Education, and Data Linkage to the backend database. Nurses on duty could find and record the caring information for patients through the PDA installed with RFID R/D reader. The information could then be used to support nursing care and shift operation. The evaluation results showed that 80% of the interviewed nurses agreed that the system might be able to reduce the nursing shift interval and to ease the mind load. 90% of the subjects agreed with that the system might be potentially capable of improving nursing care quality.
The study showed that the RFID-PDA-based system could be used as point-of-care equipment for nursing and is capable of supporting staffs in nursing shift tasks, training and data analyzing for the quality assurance.
