## Abstract

The variation of hole states with Pr doping for Y
_{x}
Pr
_{1-x}
Ba
_{2}
Cu
_{3}
O
_{7}
and Y
_{x}
Pr
_{1-x}
Ba
_{2}
Cu
_{4}
O
_{8}
has been investigated by O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Upon Pr substitution, T
_{c}
suppression rate in Y
_{x}
Pr
_{1-x}
Ba
_{2}
Cu
_{4}
O
_{8}
is slower than that in Y
_{x}
Pr
_{1-x}
Ba
_{2}
Cu
_{3}
O
_{7}
. For both systems, hole carriers in the CuO
_{2}
planes and CuO chains decrease monotonically with increasing Pr doping level. The depletion rate of hole carriers in the CuO
_{2}
planes with Pr doping in Y
_{x}
Pr
_{1-x}
Ba
_{2}
Cu
_{4}
O
_{8}
is considerably slower than that in Y
_{x}
Pr
_{1-x}
Ba
_{2}
Cu
_{3}
O
_{7}
. The oxygen content affects the depletion rate of hole carriers in cuprates with Pr doping.
