Blue phosphorescence OLED devices with an external color tuning layer (ECTL) for the purpose of producing white lighting emission has been fabricated. A graded FIrpic phosphorescent blue device shows a much higher efficiency than one that is not graded, and by applying 1.0wt.% ECTL will produce WOLED with high efficiency of 9.6 cd/A and CIE x,y at (0.31, 0.43), and by using a lower concentration of 0.5wt.% ECTL, the efficiency will even reach 12.6 cd/A and CIE x,y at (0.25, 0.43). It is demonstrated that this methodology provides an easy fabrication process for producing highly efficient WOLED devices with tunable colors.
