Abstract

Despite the long history of the technology development, airborne bathymetric lidar remains a frontier subject on the high end of the laser scanning. In order to understand the current status of this technology, a review of the published patents is conducted. At present, there are three companies manufacturing airborne bathymetric lidar systems, namely, Airborne Hydrography AB (AHAB) from Sweden, Optech Inc. from Canada, and Fugro (Tenix) LADS from Australia. The current search is conducted with the keywords, as well as the applicants. The search is made in the following patent databases, esp@cenet (European Patent Office), WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), PAJ (Japan Patent Office), USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office), and Google Patent Search. It is found that there are three patents applied from AHAB, three patents from Tenix (Fugro) LADS, and three patents from Optech Inc. However, the three patents from Optech are not directly related to bathymetric lidar.
