Abstract
The transient absorption of reaction intermediates in the reaction of methane and chlorine was detected using the Fourier-transform spectrometer. The Cl2, CH4and Ar mixture was found to be in its vibrationally excited state after laser irradiation. Reaction kinetics and rates of quenching of methane were detected. Rates of formation and decay of methane were derived on fitting observed temporal profiles with a simple kinetic model.
