Abstract

In the profile extrusion, the accuracy of profile dimensions is critical to the function of the extruded product. Although the die is designed to produce an extrudate with specified dimensions, deviations often occur during extrusion due to factors such as variations in material properties from lot to lot and disturbances of operating conditions in the extrusion line. In this study, a multivariable feedforward plus feedback control scheme was implemented on a single screw plasticating extruder using a simple 'L' shaped die with one thin section and one thick section. Take-up speed was chosen as the manipulated variable for size control (the thickness of the thick section) and die temperature was used as the manipulated variable for shape control (the thickness ratio between the two sections).
