Abstract

We propose an automatic motorcycle turn signal (AMTS) system to assist motorcyclists to signal turns automatically. The AMTS system utilizes the gyroscope sensor of the Android mobile device operating system to detect the turning direction of a motorcycle and activates the appropriate signal light and sound accordingly. We evaluated the proposed AMTS system in indoor and outdoor environments. The evaluation results indicated that the AMTS system could be useful for automatically signaling turns. We also conducted a questionnaire among motorcyclists. The results showed that the AMTS system was appreciated greatly. Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).
