Abstract

This work provides a fundamental study of kinetics in reactive polymer processing operations which involve free radical chain growth polymerizations. A realistic kinetic model has been developed for the radical chain growth type of reactive polymer processing operations. This model, which is expressed by a single equation, incorporates considerations of the molecular diffusion described by a free volume theory and the basic reaction mechanism of the free-radical chain polymerization. The model can predict not only the reaction rate and conversion profiles but also the 'on-set' of gel effect and the glass transition effect.
