Abstract

This paper relates to the improvement of mechanical design, in particularly of suspension, for hard disk drives (HDD). The performance of suspension, in term of resonant frequency, stiffness and shock resistance, has been improved in tandem with increasing data density over the past decades. Its performance enhancement has been realized through adoption of better profile/layout design and material. This paper reviewed its past progress and subsequently attempted to improve both static and dynamic performance of suspension using topology optimization.
