title = "Image contrast enhancement by improving histogram equalization algorithm",
abstract = "Image enhancement techniques are widely applied in many fields. The purpose of image enhancement is to let the details of an image become clearer and to make the processed images more suitable for observers. Histogram Equalization (HE) is one of the well-known image enhancement methods because it is simple and effective. However, it is rarely applied to consumer electronics products because it may cause the excessive contrast enhancement and the feature loss problems that result in the processed images with unnatural look and unwanted visual artifacts. This study proposes a contrast enhancement algorithm, Improved Histogram Equalization (IHE), to solve the abovementioned drawbacks of HE. Furthermore, IHE enhances the weak features of images and makes the processed images have better visual quality. The experimental results show that images processed by IHE have better contrast and are more suitable for human visual perception than those of applying HE and other HE-based methods.",
