Groundwater resources play an important role in water supply systems for arid and semi-arid regions. Recently, optimal groundwater management receives more and more attention because aquifers in many parts of the country are becoming depleted and contaminated. Like any other resource management, groundwater management is generally done under the stochastic environment. This paper illustrates a simple methodology for developing a chance-constrained ground water management model under steady state conditions. The model explicitly considers the random nature of aquifer properties which enable the determination of optimal pumping patterns in a well field with required system performance reliability. Models of this type can also enhance the trade-off between system output and system reliability.
