Abstract

As the 5G standard is about to be completed, the IoT applications will have the unprecedented development. Massive and various IoT devices sense and interact with the environment. Most of those devices are battery-powered and some of them are deployed at inaccessible locations, so how to reduce the power consumption is a critical issue. 3GPP proposed eDRX and two transport optimization mechanisms to help devices reduce power consumption. In this paper, based on the CP CIoT EPS Optimization, a flag-assisted Early Release of RRC scheme is proposed. The message flow is modified to make IoT devices enter RRC_IDLE early. The result shows that the flag-assisted Early Release of RRC can help IoT devices save power further.
