Abstract

The thermal fluctuations in the long-range order of the liquid crystal molecules scatter light strongly. Equations that predict the strength of light scattering under an applied electric field are presented. The field can either decrease or increase the scattering over a large range. The effects of polarization and the direction of light incidence are also considered.
