Abstract

Failure analysis of explanted 316L stainless steel sternal wires shows the need for improved sternal wire quality. The analysis is done by showing the wire end cut by the pliers during the closure and distinguish the cutting from all wire breaks. The extension of failure was characterized by the presence of striations on the failure surface. Striation can be observed clearly on the wire samples that showed corrosion fatigue. It is found that failure of stainless steel sternal wire is a synergic effect of the hostile environment and the applied stress.
