Abstract
CO absorption up to υ = 11 was detected in the O(3P) + C2F4 reaction. From time-resolved absorption data, the initial vibrational distribution of the CO formed in the reaction was determined. Energetically, the observed population distribution could only be accounted for by the occurrence of the reaction O3P) + triplet CF2 → CO + F2 (ΔH0 = -89 kcal/mole). A statistical model calculation, based on the assumption of a long-lived CF2O complex, predicts a CO vibrational distribution that agrees closely with the observed one.
