Abstract
We analyze the chemical potential of the surface state electrons on liquid helium, as measured by the escape rate τ−1. using the theory by Nagano et al. Using a model based on classical electrostatics, we extrapolate the experimental results to zero liquid depth where the theory is valid. A value of , where Γ is a coupling parameter of 2D one component classical plasma defined by Γ =, is found to agree with theory to within about 20% in a strongly correlated state, Γ 10, indicating that correlation eff'ects may provide a reasonable description of the chemical potential.
