Abstract

This paper proposes a novel method which contributes in remarkable contrast enhancement with luminance characteristics not differing too much. Our method involves two main stages on the luminance plane of color images: iterative sub-histogram equalization (ISHE) and histogram tuning, in which the former generates a high-contrasting image as well as preserving brightness to some level, and the latter fine-tunes the histogram to improve the variation of pixel values. The overall procedure helps to enhance better contrasts than any other similar brightness-preserving enhancing techniques. Moreover, the computational efficiency is well acceptable over execution on realistic consumer electronics.
