Abstract

This chapter demonstrates seven issues and challenges: mismatch between supply and demand in the container shipping market, uncertainty of operating profit margins, requirements for environmental regulations, continuous improvement of shipping safety management, development of larger vessels, shortage of seafarers, challenges of strategic shipping alliances, digitalization of shipping and the impact of Chinese policies on the Taiwanese shipping industry. The supply and demand of the shipping market is significantly affected by the numbers of new vessels delivered and the development of the global economy. To adapt to greater container transport demand and reduce transport costs per shipment, container shipping companies have recently been increasing capacity via new super-size container ships. The shortage of seafarers is an important issue in ship operations. The Chinese economy has experienced rapid growth. While container shipping is an international industry, Taiwanese container carriers face the same issues and challenges as other global container carriers.
