Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a ”nursing care plan decision support system.” involving three main steps: (1) the modification of the present nursing assessment form based on the Gordon functional health pattern assessment concept, (2) using a PDA as a mobile assessment tool and the Arden-syntax language to set up a decision support system to assist nurses make timely nursing assessments and appropriate nursing diagnoses, and (3) using one nursing diagnosis ”risk of injury/fall” as an example to test the system's function. The successful development of the decision support system was based on the following points: (1) Existing knowledge of nursing assessments and standard care planning were fully used. (2) A wireless PDA was introduced to enable simple and quick recording of bedside findings. (3) Registered data were optimally reused upon summarization and readmission to reduce the nurses' workloads.
