Abstract

The purpose of this article was to investigate the popularization and visibility of 75 Taiwan award-winning health websites on major search engines. Methods: Two major search engines in Taiwan: Google and Yahoo were used in our study. Twenty-three most popular searching diseases selected by The Bureau of Health Promotion of Taiwan were used as search keywords to analyze the popularization of each awarded-winning health websites on search engines. The appearance numbers of the 75 award-winning health websites in the first five hundreds search results were calculated and analyzed. Results: There were a total number of 1,545 search results linked to the award-winning health websites. Among these results, 15 health websites only appeared in one search engine, but could not been searched on the other search engine. Additionally, 12 health websites never appeared on both search engines. When narrowing down to the first three pages of search results, the access rate was 16.7% on Google and 12.3% on Yahoo respectively. Conclusions: The study results indicated that the popularity of the 75 award-winning health websites on search engines was not satisfying. We suggested the government should develop an official health-related information search engine, and integrating health-related websites to help internet users obtaining high quality health information.
