Abstract

Research on fast break in basketball often took interests in the fast break duration and the number of offender-defender in the fast break because fast break is considered a fast-paced and highly efficient offensive action that the attackers often outnumbered the defenders. The main breadth of research in basketball fast break has been based on the performance in European men's basketball games, fast break performance of the women's games and the comparisons between men and women have not been extensively studied. Purpose: Comparisons of the fast break performances between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Methods: The fast breaks from 19 games of the NBA 2016 playoffs and 15 games of the WNBA 2017 playoffs were recorded and analyzed to examine the associations between the two leagues and the characteristics of fast break performances. Results: No significant differences were found for the success rate and the shooting percentage of the fast breaks between the leagues. For the types of fast break initiation, WNBA had high associations with both pass-interception and others while NBA had high association with defensive rebounds. WNBA also showed high association with the fast break duration of under two seconds in addition to the high association with the disadvantageous number of offenders. NBA, however, showed high association with the advantageous number of offenders. For the fast break completion areas, WNBA had high associations with the perimeter in both shots taken and made, and the NBA had high association with the paint area for the shots taken and the 3-pointers for the shots made. Conclusions: Although the fast break performances of the WNBA and NBA were characterized differently, there was no difference in the fast break effectiveness between the two leagues of the highest level of the basketball.
