Abstract

Provision of work-related assistive technology devices (ATDs) is one of important the job accommodation (JA) services for employees with mobility disabilities. It still lacks objective and systematic investigations on the influencing factors of the subsidies of ATDs in JA services for employees with disabilities. The objectivity of decision-making on the subsidies of ATDs in JA services for employees with disabilities could be improved with the guidelines based on the empirical evidence from the studies of influencing factors of the subsidies of ATDs. The aim of this study was to use a chi-squared automatic interaction detector (CHAID) analysis to explore the influencing factors for determining the work-related ATDs subsidies for employees with mobility disabilities who used JA services. Methods: This study used secondary data analysis from documentations on ATDs subsidies for employees with mobility disabilities who used JA services in Taipei city between years 2008-2012. The dependent variable was the subsidy of ATDs. The independent variables were impairment-related factors and work-related factors. Results: This study analyzed 176 case files. The CHAID analysis indicated that the decision making from the review panel of experts on the subsidies of powered wheelchairs were significantly associated with the interactions between impairment-related factors (difficulty in walking, upper extremity pain and needs for positioning) and work-related factors (self-reported needs of a powered wheelchair and frequent outdoor moving around at work); the subsidies of the pressure relief seat cushions associated primarily with the impairment-related factors (trunk deformity, degenerative diseases and the needs for performing pressure relieving movements); and the subsidies of the ergonomic chairs associated primarily with the work-related factors (the percentage of working difficulty and requiring sitting for long periods) (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results provided detailed information about developing guidelines for ATDs subsidies for employees with mobility disabilities. Job function and impairment-related factors play significant roles in subsidizing ATDs for persons with mobility disabilities who used JA services. This study could also provide empirical evidence to the panel of experts to improve their decision-making process.
