Abstract
Many foreign health aides in Taiwan have become the major roles to supply nursing services. By reviewing past relevant researches, most were focused on the care quality of foreign health aides in hospitals or long-term care facilities. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships among care stress, care preparation, and care skills of foreign home health aides. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design with purposive sampling was used to obtain data from 136 foreign home health aides who continuous care disabled elders in Yi-Lan and Keelung countries in Taiwan. Data collection was performed by five well-trained research assistants and structure instruments included the stress perception questionnaire, caregiver preparedness inventory, and care skills observation scale. Internal consistency reliability Cronbach’s α was 0.89, 0.94, 0.93, respectively. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, t-test were used to analyze all obtained data. Results: The results show that: 1. High work stress perceived by foreign home health aides was related to poor care preparation and inadequate care skills (p<0.01). At the same time, the higher the level of preparation, the better the exhibited skills were (p<0.01); 2. The foreign home health aides’ characteristics with who lacked pre-vocational training in care giving, had less caring experience, were suffering from negative moods, slept for less than 8 hours per day or were needed for continuous providing wound care, the scores of care stress, care preparation and care skills were showed significant differences. Application in nursing: The findings would be helpful as a reference in training protocol of foreign home health aides in Yi-Lan and Keelung countries and as a baseline data for future research.
