Abstract

Computer competencies have been reported to be essential in nursing tasks. Nurses play a significant role in the health workforce and need to be properly educated for their roles in nursing informatics. However, the nursing informatics education and training is still in its early stage in Taiwan. A thorough understanding of the curricula is required to develop a better nursing informatics curriculum. The contents of 69 nursing curricula from technical level to PhD degree in Taiwan were surveyed. It was found that only one-third of the programs have obligatory computer courses in their curricula. A survey of 118 clinical nurses also showed that their computer competencies were seldom learned from the schools. Most of the respondents agreed that computer competency should be included in the nursing ladders program. We suggest that the school curriculum need to be reexamined and revised. At the same time, the nursing managers in hospitals could and should consider to enhance staff development and the on-the-job training of nursing informatics.
