Abstract

Background and Purposes: Physical activity might affect development of children. But there is no assessment tool of the physical activity for preschoolers in Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to develop a proxy-report physical activity diary for preschoolers and to validate this physical activity assessment tool by a three-dimensuional accelerometer (RT3) in various children population and test time. Methods: Twenty preschool subjects (12 children were normal development and S children with developmental delay) were recruited in this study by convenience sampling method. Physical activity of each subject was recorded by primary caregivers or preschool teachers for three days (2 weekdays and 1 weekend) with the use of a physical activity diary and a three-dimensional accelerometer. Results: The Spearmen rank correlation coefficients between physical activity diary and RT3 data of the moderate to vigorous physical activity and the adjusted lower physical activity in all subjects were r(subscript s)=0.61 and r(subscript s)=0.77 (p<0.01), respectively. Significant moderate correlation (r=(subscript s)=0.50~0.98, p<0.05) was found between physical activity diary and RT3 data of most of moderate to vigorous physical activity and the adjusted low physical activity in various children population and test time, such as male versus females preschoolers, normal development versus developmental delay, with versus without attending schools, test time in weekday versus weekend. Conclusions: This proxy-report physical activity diary for preschoolers was validated with the use of a three-dimensional accelerometer.
