Institute of Technology Law(ITL) at NCTU was established in the year 2000. As the IT industry in Taiwan evolved, our founder, Professor Shang-Jyh Liu, sensed the growing need and felt obligated to provide a better educational environment for those who seek such knowledge. In 1994, the "Intellectual Property Management" Program became available for students and legal professional for the first time. In 1996, we established the "Center of Business Law" here at the University, followed by the great success of the "National Intellectual Property Symposium" in 1997. Ever since the establishment of ITL, our institute stood by our dedication to compose large, nation-wide symposiums and conferences on topics relating intellectual property laws and all other relevant fields of studies. It's become a constant tradition since the year 2000 that the annual "National Technology Law Conference" be held here at NCTU, inviting top speakers, attracting hundreds of scholars and legal professionals, as well as business managers and government officials to come to join us in a discussion of intellectual property laws.
ITL provides both fundamental and advanced legal courses. Fundamental courses offer solid training of core legal subjects; advanced courses provide a wide selection of seminars that focus on specific issues such as patent litigation, white collar crime, gender and law, wrongful conviction, arbitration and mediation, WTO laws and medical law.
We offer 6 major certificate programs for students to pursue, including Intellectual Property Rights, US Law, Biotechnology and Medicine, Legal Studies in English, Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management, and Fundamental Laws programs. However, students may also tailor a selection of courses that fit their needs.
Our US Law and Legal Studies in English programs provide solid training for students who wish to work in an international environment or pursue law degrees abroad. Our effort of establishing an English learning environment is reflected on the achievements of our students: our students were hired by international law firms located in Hong Kong right after graduation; around 30% of our graduates will earn a second LLM in one of the top 10 US law schools.
At ITL, our training extends outside the classroom. We are the first in Taiwan to collaborate with courts and prosecutor’s offices to establish internship programs. The program has now extended to law firms, NGOs and international organizations.
Though relatively young, our institute is one of the most sought-after resources by high-tech companies in terms of talents in legal counseling and affairs. The excellence and reputation our institute has achieved in the past decade were unsurpassed in any other law institutes across the nation.
