The Department of Transportation and Logistics Management is committed to deliver relevant college education and outstanding research in the field of transportation and logistics management.

The Department seeks to prepare its students with core competency as well as necessary knowledge and skills to become leaders and/or educators in the field of transportation and logistics management.

The Department also attempts to provide an impeccable learning environment, solid curricula and effective lecture/teaching skills for its students to apply, integrate, and create knowledge based on its distinguished faculty members.

The Department is designed to serve a diverse student body with all kinds of background and will continue offering its long-recognized contribution and playing the consulting role in the society of transportation and logistics Management.

History

The Department of Transportation and Logistics Management in National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) is the most prominent transportation-related department, consistently held its top rankings for its programs in Taiwan. The top-notch reputation of this elite department is a testament to the high quality of its programs, its faculty and its students – who come from Taiwan and abroad.

The transportation education has a long and distinguished history at Hsinchu Campus of NCTU, dating back to 1973 when the Department of Marine Transportation was established. In 1974, the Department of Transportation Management was established to cultivate the engineering and management professionals for the various fields of transportation, such as land, sea, air and urban transportation. In 1980, NCTU formally created the Department of Transportation Engineering and Management, with merging the Department of Marine Transportation Management to the Department of Transportation Management. The department was later renamed as the Department of Transportation Technology and Management in 2001.

The Department has been devoting to multi-disciplinary training and researches. Its curricula also cover information and management in addition to the core transportation subject. The research activities extend from the classical transportation planning and management to the evolving areas such as Intelligent Transport Systems and Global Logistics Management. The Department began to offer the Master degree program in 1990 and Ph.D. degree program in 1993.

On the other hand, the Institute of Traffic and Transportation (previously the Institute of Transportation Engineering) was established at Taipei Campus of NCTU in 1976 with the primary purposes of offering a graduate program in the transportation field and undertaking transportation-related research activities. The institute’s emphasis is focused on equipping graduate students with technical expertise and a broad understanding of transportation in preparation for their professional careers, particularly transportation planning and management. In an effort to extend its research capacity, the institute established the Ph.D. Program in 1987. In 2001, the institute further enhanced its graduate program for part time students, which is primarily centered on globalization, supply chain development and logistics.

The Department takes great pride in its achievements, which are reflected by our alumni who are currently working in government agencies, transportation service industry, high technology manufacturing industry, and academia. The Department has been renamed as the Department of Transportation and Logistics Management after the merge of the Institute of Traffic and Transportation and the Department of Transportation Technology and Management starting August 1 of 2013.
