NCTU has a remarkably long history, in accordance with superior traditions of Tang-Shan Industrial College and Chiao Tung University Shanghai campus. After the reestablishment of university in Taiwan, in order to coordinate with needs of national economic developments, the department of transport engineering was founded in 1978 upon governmental approval. However, since the curriculum is similar with civil engineering, the name of department had been revised as Department of Civil Engineering in 1979. As the efforts of expansions and developments in past years, both of our teacher’s qualification and facilities have achieved the highest standards. For more than twenty years, our alumni are creating enormous contributions for national developments in many civil engineering related fields domestically. In recent years, as larger population are starting to become more ecological consciously, to attach importance to the environmental changes caused by the economic developments and industrial constructions, thus, civil engineers must concern the impacts towards the environment while planning and building fundamental constructions. Additionally, with issues in exhaustion of energy and natural resources, moreover, with global warming and sea level rising caused by the increase of the greenhouse effect, all of these issues are challenging our continuing developments of the country.

Civil engineers shoulder missions of enhancing the living standard and protecting the safety of human beings, thus, the future teaching and researches of our department will combine human needs with Energy, Ecology and Environment (EEE) in order to reach the total balance of entirety, furthermore, to aim on educating new generation civil engineers and to carry out leading researches across civil engineering related fields. NCTU is highly recognized worldwide in electric information and communication technology related fields, our department is located next to the Hsin-Chu science park where is the base of pioneering Taiwanese technology. With enormous high-tech resources to support state of the art civil engineering technology researches and to provide opportunities for civil engineers to apply new technologies to constructing high-tech facilities. These unique circumstances put our department in an advantageous position to present superior civil engineers not only in their own field, but also with opportunities and potentials among high-tech fields.
After years of expansion and development, both of our teacher’s qualification and facilities in our department have achieved the highest standards. Whether in instructing or researching, our department is always highly scored among universities in the nation in structure engineering, construction management, water conservancy and ocean engineering, ground engineering, survey and space information and information technology. In teacher’s qualification, currently there are 28 full-time teachers (including 21 professors, 6 associate professors and 1 assistant professor ) and 9 part-time teachers, all of them are PhDs from top domestic and overseas universities, many of them have been awarded The Distinctive Research Award from National Science Committee. As in students, currently there are 287 under graduate students, 178 master’s degree students and 101 PhD degree students. In addition, there are 16 assistants assisting admission affairs, experiments and researches. Compare with other universities, our department of civil engineering has a lower teacher-student ratio, means every student can receive sufficient attentions.
For our department to increase educational effects in order to make graduates to meet the future needs of human resource market, we are currently reforming our curriculum and actively reinforcing in-school training. Not only to refined civil engineering majoring subjects, but to open new undergraduate courses such as [eco-engineering], [applying computer to construction management] and [introduction to GPS] etc., new graduated courses such as [coast view and eco design], [global positioning system], [applying and construction enterprise intelligent], [large project finance], [remote surveying] and [application of AI to civil engineering] etc. to ensure specialty education to develop with science simultaneously, moreover, to introduce new technologies from other fields and to extend the field of civil engineering in coordination with new businesses. In the future, curriculums and researches of our department will be carried toward following themes continuously:
Application of information communication and nanometer technology to civil engineering
High-tech factory building vibration(quake) prevention research
High efficiency calculation research
To develop new technologies for anti-quake experiments
R&D on space positioning technology
R&D and integrations on space and water conservancy information systems
Real-time observation and decision supporting systems
To maximize the advantageous position of NCTU and to expend applications of high-tech to civil engineering related fields, to strengthen the leading position of NCTU department of civil engineering in construction technology field.
